UNFCCC COP17 Rights of Nature Highlights in Durban

UN COP17 Climate Change Conference was held in Durban, South Africa Monday, November 28 – December 9, 2011.  While key negotiators for member states ended with an agreement that leaves the planet vulnerable to 3 to 5 degree Celsius temperature increases, the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature actively advocated a systemic alternative that balances the rights of human communities with the recognition of the rights of the ecosystem.  Our Rights of Nature – Rights of Mother Earth message was well received and echoed by numerous organizations.

The Global Alliance, in partnership with Global Exchange, EnAct International, Fundacion Pachamama, CJN!, Tom Goldtooth – Indigenous Environmental Network, Pablo Solon – former UN Ambassador for Bolivia, South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA), and Women’s Earth and Climate Caucus presented a series of educational and action events advocating Rights of Nature/Rights of Mother Earth both inside the UNFCCC COP17 Hall and outside in the civil society’s Peoples Space.
