Chevron/Texaco Case

Rights of Nature Tribunal

Chevron

Presented by Julio Prieto

On February 5, 1964 , the Ecuadorian government concessioned  a land area of approximately 1,431,430 acres to the Gulf Texaco Consortium to explore and extract oil from the Ecuadorian Amazon.  The same contract and subsequent agreements established Texaco as the operator in charge of all technical operations. Texaco remained as the technical operator of the entire area for the duration of the consortium until 1992.

The case briefing describes the extensive, devastating impacts of Texaco’s operation on the inhabitants of the Northern Amazon of Ecuador and the environment itself.

During last 30 years, there have been many studies that recognize the impact of this activity on the population surrounding oil installations ,The local effects of the oil industry during the last thirty years are disastrous. Oil exploitation in the northern Ecuadorian Amazon is responsible for 2 million hectares of deforestation. Over 650,000 barrels of oil have been spilled in forests, rivers and estuaries. Toxic product of oil exploration, such as heavy metals from formation waters , have polluted water sources in the region. Several affected indigenous groups such as the Cofan, Siona Redwoods, have become endangered minorities.”
